Open Question: What device is used to test coins for authenticity? - not a scale or magnifier…?
A few years ago I sold some gold bullion coins to a dealer. He tested the coins with a small electronic device. I believe there were some electric contacts in the coin slot. It was not a scale…. What was the device? Who manufactures it? What is the operating principle?
Open Question: Do you think it is possible that gold coins are being diluted?
I wonder if gold coins are being diluted like they were in the past? How would we really know?.
King Croesus of Lydia was the first to mint gold coins more than 2500 years ago. Subsequently many a country’s ruler used the trick of debasing the value of gold coins by adding other metals to their content. If the purity of gold in coins was diluted in this way then inflation would occur - more coins would be required to buy goods. And.. of course , we would not be getting one ounce of gold in the coins that we think we are paying for.
Does anyone know if it’s possible to test a coin to not only verify the ounces, but the quality of the gold. And now , there is so much scrap gold being sold, how would we know if it is filled inside with 14 or 18 carat recycled gold?
