Open Question: Where can I get good breeding stock?
I am an amateur fish breeder in NJ about 25 miles from NYC. Right now I raise gold fish. Most end up being sold as feeders, 200 fish for $10 to a nearby pet shop.
I have four tanks of sarassa comets and four tanks of shubunkin, each one is 55 gallons, two large lee air filters per tank and a single 150 watt penn plax heater to maintain about 64 degrees in my cool basement.
Last year was my first spawn. My original two 55’s have two pairs each. Those 8 fish made over 1000 babies!
My second tanks which I hope to spawn this year have two pairs each too. My other 4 tanks have about 20 left from last year’s spawn. I can’t even tell male from female yet.
They breed every April or early May. My spawning tanks are 20 longs. I move a pair of good looking parents to each tank and raise the temperature to 70 degrees about 1 degree per day and wait for them to spawn. Once I know they are done, they go back to the big tanks and the eggs stay in the 20’s. I drop the water to about 6″. There is about 1″ pea gravel in these tanks. These tanks have the small lee air filters because they aren’t deep. I’m getting a few more for this year’s spawn.
As the babies grow, the 20 gallon tanks become too small. There’s as many as 200 1/2″ fish in there. Some get sold when they are only 3 months old. Others get the chance to live 6 months. Out of 1000+ fish born, only about the 20 best remain. I sold about 100 for $1 each last month. I need the room!
Is this good? If you breed fish, do you end up culling out 90% of the spawn? Am I doing OK? Should I have more good salable fish? Thanks.

I’m looking a getting rid of a bit of unwanted gold jewelery, it’s not the best looking so will not sell it, was going to send it off to one of the many gold buying companies, as there is so many i don’t know where to start..
